We all want clean rivers and seas, and none of us want our sewage ending up in them. It's easy to feel helpless when it keeps happening, but there's actually lots we can all do, whether you've got two minutes or a whole afternoon.
Sign the petition.
1
We have a petition calling on the government to bring the water industry back into public ownership, and over 300,000 people have already signed. Sign here
Report it.
2
If you see or smell sewage, call the Environment Agency incident hotline on 0800 80 70 60. Every report adds to the record.
Check it, log it.
3
Check Rivers & Seas Watch or download the Surfers Against Sewage Safer Seas & Rivers app for pollution alerts before you swim. If you're poorly after a dip, report it in the app, and when an alert goes off, use it to email your MP. Every report builds the evidence.
Complain to Southern Water.
4
If you see or smell a release, or can't swim because of one, tell them. Every complaint is logged, and if you're not happy with their response, you can take it to the Consumer Council for Water. Help us keep the pressure on.
Write to your MP.
5
A short email in your own words is enough. MPs do count them.
Bin it, don't flush it.
6
Wipes, cotton buds and sanitary products block pipes and add to overflows. Only the three Ps go down the loo: pee, poo and paper. Cooking fat goes in the bin too, not down the sink.
USE ECO FRIENDLY PRODUCTS.
7
Using eco-friendly cleaning products prevents harmful toxins from washing down our drains and into our rivers and sea, keeping marine life safe and healthy.
Stay informed.
8
What you don't know can't enrage you. Follow Windrush Against Sewage Pollution, the Sewage Campaign Network, Surfers Against Sewage and of course us. Everyone shares regular updates on what's happening and what we can do about it.
Go easy on water when it's pouring.
9
Holding off on the washing machine or a long shower during heavy rain eases the pressure on the system. A water butt helps too.
Spread the word.
